Topical Herbs for Pain

Whenever I work with pain conditions I always recommend folks purchase a topical herbal pain reliever. Plants have constituents that decrease inflammation, reduce swelling and improve circulation in addition to analgesic affects. While any of the options in this list will give you some relief, to get the most out of your product, you’ll want to choose according to your specific pain pattern.

Arnica Oil

I typically recommend arnica when there is a new injury that has visible signs of swelling or bruising. You won’t want to put this on an open wound, rather an injury like an ankle sprain. Get Arnica on Fullscript at 20% off.

St. Johns Wort Oil

Perfect for pain that has a nerve component such as tingly, numb or shooting sensations. Get it on Fullscript at 20% off.

Muscle Melt

A blend of Chinese and Western herbs, this herbal version of “IcyHot” has been in my toolkit for nearly a decade. I’ve found it provides instant relief for tense or tight muscles, especially in the neck. It comes in convenient, mess-free patches that you can wear all day or night, an alcohol based liniment (fave) and an on-the-go balm. I carry the whole Muscle Melt line in the clinic!

Zheng Gu Shui Liniment

A Chinese formula that thrives in cases of arthritis or other joint pain. Simply spray this formula on the affected area and rub in. Get it here.

Comfrey Salve

This plant shines with injury at the bone level. If you’re recovering from a break, fracture or have had a surgery that causes deep pain and or scarring, this is your go to. Here is my favorite brand.

Somedays Cramp Cream

This is my favorite topical for menstrual cramps. A blend of multiple plants, including a few listed above, this balm will help take the edge off any discomfort occurring in the abdomen, pelvis and legs due to painful periods. Check it out.

CBD Balm

I generally find that the above recommendations can be just as effective as topical CBD for half the price. However, if you want to give CBD a try, I recommend purchasing a full spectrum topical CBD from a cannabis shop for best results. I haven’t found CBD sold in grocery stores to be as effective.

Topicals are a great addition to your toolkit while receiving regular acupuncture and for any flare ups that may arise in the future!
